Carlton would come 6th in the 1974 Under 19's competition, some way behind Collingwood who would bring up their 3rd Premiership at this level.
To make the finals Richmond had to beat top side Footscray in the last game, Richmond held the start of the game up for 20 minutes while they rushed several U19 players back from their reserve match. They won a close game with the players that had played in the reserves kicking the bulk of the goals. Footscray protested the result, Richmond received a slap on the wrist and as a result no player from that season on were allowed to play in the reserves and U19s on the same day, this had been a common practice among all clubs. Richmonds win cost Carlton a place in the finals, Carlton had lost up to 10 players a game over the second half of the season due to a large amount of injuries in the senior and reserve teams which had the u19 players topping up the reserve team. Carlton would have been at full strength for the finals if they had made them and were considered a major flag chance.
