Game Review
Don't let the scoreboard fool you - we had the Pies covered all day, but just couldn't continue our golden first quarter as the game clammed up. Matt Clape led the charge with 31 possessions and BOG to follow up his 7 goals the previous week, well supported by a dominant midfield of Greg Williams, Fraser Brown and Ang Christou off half back.The Blues got off to a brilliant start kicking four goals straight. Carlton dominating every line. Then they added six behinds, some which were very easy shots. Collingwood in the mean time added a couple of goals to give them some hope.Then Carlton hit back adding two more goals before the end on the first quarter.
A fairly even second term with Collingwood adding three goals to two, to reduce the quarter time 28 point margin by five points at half time.
The Woods started to get on top through half back and the centre, their running players being influential. They added four unanswered goals to get within three points at the 15 minute mark of the term. Their fans were up and about. It looked like anybody's game with the early Blues' winners being held quiet. Then those players seemed to flick a switch and the play of the first two quarters returned and Carlton added four goals to go into the last break holding a four goal lead.
Carlton controlled the final quarter with the defence back to its best, with Ang Christou playing one of his best games, well supported by Michael Sexton, Stephen Silvagni, Peter Dean and Adrian Whitehead. Collingwood kicked the only goal for the quarter deep in junk time. Brad Pearce should have kicked at least five goals. He was quick and a fine over head mark, a good focal point in the absence of Kernahan. Earl Spalding was a great player, actively contesting and marking around the ground. Matt Clape along with Pearce are excellent pick ups for the Blues. Dean Rice, Craig Bradley, Andrew McKay and Greg Williams were at times unstoppable. Glenn Manton scored his first goal for the Blues.
